How do we know that there is something we should know, but do not yet know?
It is a strange question. If I do not know something, how could I possibly know that it is missing?
Yet this question may be fundamental to how we improve ourselves. Learning what we already know is relatively straightforward. The more difficult skill is developing an awareness of the empty spaces in our understanding—the missing pieces that we have not yet discovered, but that matter to what we are trying to achieve.
So perhaps the first question is not:
What am I missing?
Perhaps it is:
Where am I trying to go?
Can We Know What Is Missing Without Knowing the Goal?
Imagine that you are putting together a puzzle without knowing what the completed picture should look like. How would you know whether an important piece is missing?
A goal gives our thinking a boundary. Once we know what we are trying to achieve, we can begin imagining what must happen for that outcome to become reality.
What is step one? What must happen after that? What does each stage require? What needs to be prepared before we can move from one stage to another? Which stages depend on each other?
Slowly, a pipeline begins to appear:
Goal → stages → requirements → dependencies → missing knowledge → action
Suppose we want to move from stage A to stage B. We can ask:
What must be true before B can happen?
What knowledge is required? What resources are required? What assumptions are we making? What could prevent the transition? Is there something that we are currently taking for granted?
These questions expose gaps that would otherwise remain invisible.
In this sense, a goal does more than tell us where to go. It defines the scope within which our ignorance becomes visible.
But How Detailed Should Our Thinking Be?
There is another problem.
We can examine almost anything endlessly.
Every stage can be divided into smaller stages. Every requirement contains more requirements. Every explanation can lead to another question.
So a goal must define not only the scope of our thinking, but also its resolution.
How detailed do I need to be for this particular goal?
If I am planning dinner tonight, I probably do not need to study the molecular structure of every ingredient. If I am designing a new medicine, however, details at the molecular level may become essential.
Both activities involve food or chemistry, but the necessary resolution of knowledge is completely different.
Therefore, knowing what we should know requires at least two boundaries:
What am I trying to achieve?
And:
At what level of detail do I need to understand it in order to achieve that goal?
Without the first, our knowledge has no direction. Without the second, our search for knowledge can become endless.
What If the Goal Itself Is Wrong?
Then another uncomfortable question appears:
What if the goal that defines our thinking is itself mistaken?
We may carefully construct milestones, processes, requirements, and plans, only to discover that reality refuses to cooperate.
Perhaps the goal was unrealistic. Perhaps an assumption was wrong. Perhaps something we believed to be important turns out not to matter. Or perhaps new information reveals a possibility we could not see when the goal was originally defined.
Then the goal itself must become part of the evaluation.
This means the process cannot simply be:
Set a goal → make a plan → execute it.
It is closer to:
Set a goal → model the process → identify gaps → act → encounter reality → evaluate → revise the model → revise the goal if necessary → continue.
And then repeat.
Our goals reveal what we need to know, but what we learn can also transform our goals.
The process is recursive.
What Does Ignorance Mean in This Process?
There is another distinction that matters.
Not knowing something is not necessarily ignorance in the sense I want to use the word here.
There are infinitely many things I do not know. I cannot investigate all of them, nor do I need to.
The more consequential form of ignorance occurs when something relevant has entered our awareness, but we choose not to examine it because doing so would disturb what we already believe.
Suppose I receive a piece of information that contradicts an important part of my existing understanding.
What should I do?
I could reject the new information immediately.
I could accept it immediately.
Or I could ask a more difficult question:
Why is there a contradiction?
Perhaps the new information is wrong.
Perhaps my previous knowledge is wrong.
Perhaps both are partially correct but apply under different conditions.
Perhaps I have misunderstood the relationship between them.
Whatever the answer, the contradiction deserves examination.
In this sense, ignorance is not simply the absence of knowledge. It can also be the decision to leave a meaningful contradiction unresolved when it matters to what we are trying to achieve.
Can Contradiction Help Us Discover What We Do Not Know?
This may be one of the most useful functions of contradiction.
When new information enters our mind, we should not merely ask:
Do I like this information?
Or even:
Do I believe it?
We can ask:
How does this fit with everything else I believe to be true?
Let the new information travel through the frameworks already existing in the mind.
Where does it fit?
Where does it fail?
What does it explain?
What does it contradict?
And when it contradicts something, which assumption should be investigated?
Of course, reality itself can contain tension, uncertainty, incomplete evidence, and perspectives that appear contradictory because our models are incomplete. So the purpose is not to force every idea into artificial harmony.
The purpose is to notice contradictions rather than unconsciously building our decisions on top of them.
A contradiction is often not merely a problem.
It is a signal.
It tells us:
There is something here that you do not yet understand.
What Happens When Our Mental Model Becomes More Coherent?
Why should any of this matter in practical life?
Because eventually we act according to the models inside our minds.
We design, speak, build, decide, predict, cooperate, invest, create, and make commitments based on what we believe reality is like.
If our internal model contains important contradictions that we have ignored, those contradictions can eventually appear in our actions.
A false assumption becomes a bad prediction.
A bad prediction becomes a poor decision.
A poor decision produces an unexpected result.
And an unexpected result becomes disappointment.
The problem is not that reality has betrayed us. The problem may be that our expectation was built from an inaccurate model of reality.
So perhaps disappointment itself can sometimes become information.
Instead of asking only:
Why didn't reality give me what I expected?
We can also ask:
What did my expectation assume about reality that turned out not to be true?
That question turns disappointment into another opportunity for learning.
Then How Do We Know What We Should Know?
Perhaps there is no final answer.
Instead, there is a discipline of repeatedly asking:
What am I trying to achieve?
What stages must reality pass through for that outcome to happen?
What does each stage require?
What assumptions am I making?
What do I need to understand at this stage—and at what level of detail?
Where are the gaps in my knowledge?
Where are the contradictions in what I currently believe?
What am I aware of but choosing not to examine?
What has reality shown me that my current model cannot explain?
And does what I have learned require me to change the process—or even the goal itself?
Then we act.
Reality responds.
And we ask again.
Is This Process Ever Finished?
Probably not.
But perhaps that is not a defect of the process. Perhaps that is the process.
We imagine something. We try to produce it with our hands, our words, and our decisions. Reality responds. We compare what happened with what we expected. Then we adjust our knowledge, our actions, and sometimes ourselves.
Over time, ideally, the distance between imagination and reality becomes smaller.
Our imagination becomes less like fantasy and more like a model of something that can actually be produced.
Our expectations become better calibrated.
Our actions become more coherent.
Our disappointments become more informative.
And our goals become more grounded in reality.
Perhaps excellence is not the state of finally knowing everything we need to know.
Perhaps excellence is developing the ability to notice more quickly what we should know but do not yet know—and having the integrity to investigate it.
That applies to our work.
It applies to our careers.
It applies to our relationships.
And ultimately, it applies to the question of how we choose to live.
Because before we can ask what knowledge we are missing, there is an even larger question:
What are we trying to achieve with our lives?
And if our answer to that question determines what we believe we need to know, what we pay attention to, what we ignore, and what we spend our limited time pursuing, then perhaps the deepest question is not simply:
What do I not know?
It is:
What am I trying to become—and what might I need to know, question, unlearn, or stop ignoring in order to get there?
